Photograph of a painted portrait of George Vancouver, a British navigator, [s.d.]. Vancouver is shown from his torso to his head and is turned slightly to the left. He is wearing a dark suit that blends in with the background, and a lightly-colored shirt. He has white hair or a white wig that is curled near his ears. He was born in 1758 and died near London on May 10, 1798. He served under Cook in his second and third voyages and commanded an expedition to the Pacific, 1781-95. During this trip, he explored the Strait of San Juan de Fuca, the Gulf of Georgia, Vancouver Island, and the coast of California. He left a narrative which was published after his death.
