Description
Marian Anderson (1897-1993) was a famed African-American opera star whose performances at the White House, the Lincoln Memorial and elsewhere broke racial barriers. Marinship Corporation was a Liberty shipbuilding company located in Sausalito. Marin City, to the north, was developed as the location of housing for workers and their families. In the span of Marinship's three and a half years of active service (1942-1945), fifteen EC-2 Liberty Ships were built. In addition, the operation provided seventy-eight oil takers and twenty invasion barges, and outfitted three British coasters, and repaired twenty vessels damaged in battle.
