Note: "Ndjoyas Bruder (Christ) mit seiner Frau, Paulo und Christina. Cf. K 1972 (E-30.30.011) ohne Frau." (E-30-0,4). - Datum der Photographie ca.1914. (Geary 1985: 30). - "Kg Ndj. Bruder Paulo u. Frau Christina. (Wuhrmann, A., 1917. Beschreibung zu den Lichtbildern aus Bamum. E-30-0,6). Note translation: "Ndjoya's brother (a christian) with his wife, Paulo and Christina. Cf. K 1972 (E-30.30.011) without his wife." (E-30-0,4). - Date of photograph: c.1914 (Geary 1988:30). - K[in]g Ndj[oya s] brother Paulo and his wife Christina. Njoya has about 30 brothers and about 40 sisters. When the missionaries began their work in Bamum in 1906 it really was as if christianity was the yeast which penetrated everywhere and whose traces you can consequently find everywhere, among high and low, young and old, slave and free. Three of our chief s brothers attended baptismal instruction, sent their many wives away and let themselves be baptised. Two of them sadly fell back into their old disorderly way of life, but Paulo has given christianity no cause for shame. He gave his 6 wives to his mother before he was baptised and married a young christian woman. He made many enemies through his conversion but he bore teasing and abuse with admirable patience. He built a hut for himself and his wife very close to the mission station, and was always a welcome guest as far as the missionaries were concerned. (A. Wuhrmann, 1917, Commentaries on Slides from Bamum, E-30-0,6).
