Al Schacht, the "Clown Prince of Baseball," performs at Gilmore Field. Schacht began pitching in the minor leagues, then had some success in the major leagues before developing his popular baseball comedy act. He entertained at many major and minor league games, first with fellow comedian Nick Altrock and then on his own. During World War II, Schacht went overseas to entertain American servicemen. He also wrote an autobiography, My Own Particular Screwball, and later became a restaurateur. The caption reads, "Known the world over as Baseball's Clown Prince, Al Schacht visits Gilmore Field tonight to royally entertain the fans preceding the Hollywood-San Diego game starting at 8:15 o'clock. He's on his fifth annual tour with a new storehouse of spontaneous laughs." Photo dated: Sept. 3, 1941.
