Description
Portrait of Umyazi, an elderly Zulu man squatting outside in front of a wall next to a tree. He is wearing a two-part apron made of hide and a European military jacket. He is seemingly gesturing while narrating.
Handwriting on the back of one copy reading: "Alter Zulu von m. Großeltern erzählend. Ekuhlengeni" ("Old Zulu telling about my grandparents. Ekuhlengeni"). Handwriting on the back of the other copy reading: "’Umyazi Zulu’, leider noch Heide, trotzdem er sich von den alten Missionaren Filter, Schroeder, Wolff, Volker, Köneke u. Stallbom zu erzählen weiß. Er wohnt seit seiner Geburt in der Nähe von oder auf der Ekuhlengeni Missionsstation am ? Umholozi. Hier erzählt er." ("'Umyazi Zulu', unfurtunately still a heathen, although he knows to tell about the old missionaries Filter, Schroeder, Wolff, Volker, Köneke and Stallbom. He has lived near or on the Ekuhlengeni mission station at ? Umholozi since his birth.")
