Standing like gaunt ruins of a shell-torn village, chimneys of cottages on the beach are shown on Novembr 24, 1938, after they were swept by the brush fire near Topanga Canyon. So intense was the heat of the flames that the fire leaped across the broad Roosevelt Highway and ignited scores of beach homes. The homes burned to the ground while their owners watched helplessly after trying to save their belongings.
