Description
This collection includes approximately 40,000 photographs by commercial photographer Ralph Morris, who worked in the Los Angeles area from 1939-1981. His advertising and industrial clients included department stores, restaurants, the automobile and petroleum industries as well as business executives. Also included is the Luckhaus Studio collection of architecture, fashion, the movie industry, sports and street scenes, images which Morris obtained in 1939.
Childrens Hospital Society of Los Angeles was founded on April 1, 1901 by a small group of women who recognized the need for a hospital that could serve ill, crippled, and under-privileged children. The original hospital, which opened in 1902, was a modest two-story clapboard house located at 769 Castelar Street and the southwest corner of Alpine Street; it had nine beds and one volunteer doctor who treated fourteen patients that first year. By 1905, the hospital had expanded to accommodate 20 patients and converted the kitchen pantry into a "surgery suite"; by now, 229 children had received care. In 1913, Childrens Hospital relocated to a new location at Sunset and Vermont Avenue, opening a 100-bed facility. A year later, on February 7, 1914, a new Childrens Hospital was opened by President Woodrow Wilson, who presided over the ceremonies from The White House via telegraph. Through the years, the hospital had many "firsts':: on March 29, 1939, history was made when surgeon John C. Jones performed the first pediatric heart surgery on the West Coast; in 1967, the first living-related kidney transplant was performed; in 1993, the world's first double lobar lunch transplant was performed; and in 2003, a team of 80 surgeons, physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel participated in a 24-hr surgical procedure to separate conjoined twin girls. As the decades passed, new services were added, buildings went up and came down, and Childrens Hospital Los Angeles evolved to serve more children and those with the most complex medical needs. Today, CHLA is a national leader in pediatric care and research, serving over 300,000 patients annually at its four-acre facility, located at 4650 Sunset Boulevard.
View of a warehouse showing numerous doors and windows, which possibly lead to different businesses. The sign above the entrance on the left reads "Childrens Hospital Salvage Dept." A few automobiles can be seen parked along the building. It is unclear if this is the front, or rear of the structure.
