"Mwimbi Young Warriors". Grou portrait of young male warriors carrying spears and shields. The site of Chogoria sits on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, 35 miles from the summit at 17,040 feet, and administered to the Chuka, Mwimbi and Meru tribes. Mission station established by Dr A.C. Irvine, his wife and Mr Ernest Carr when they arrived, in 1922, from TumuTumu. Despite the Christian presence, traditional practices still took place including one called 'spear blooding' in which using a weapon for the first time was regarded as an initiation into manhood, often resulted in the death of someone, sometimes young girls.
