This collection includes approximately 40,000 photographs by commercial photographer Ralph Morris, who worked in the Los Angeles area from 1939-1981. His advertising and industrial clients included department stores, restaurants, the automobile and petroleum industries as well as business executives. Also included is the Luckhaus Studio collection of architecture, fashion, the movie industry, sports and street scenes, images which Morris obtained in 1939. The circus came to Pershing Square when the Pacific Coast Showmen's Association took over the Defense House activities for the day. Elephants, tigers, monkies, clowns, trapeze artists and a complete sideshow entertained the crowd. Estimated at 10,000 at peak periods, the onlookers set a new nationwide record for buying defense bonds and stamps. Exact totals were not available, but treasury officials said that the day's totals exceeded the best previous day by more than 300 per cent. Photo dated: January 1, 1942.
