This collection includes approximately 40,000 photographs by commercial photographer Ralph Morris, who worked in the Los Angeles area from 1939-1981. His advertising and industrial clients included department stores, restaurants, the automobile and petroleum industries as well as business executives. Also included is the Luckhaus Studio collection of architecture, fashion, the movie industry, sports and street scenes, images which Morris obtained in 1939. Pacific Palisades is a district within the city of Los Angeles. In 1911, film director Thomas Ince created his Western film factory called Inceville. Years later, Rev. Charles H. Scott along with the Southern California Methodist Episcopal Church bought the land. In 1922, Rev. Scott founded Pacific Palisades, hoping to creat an elaborate religious-intellectual commune; three years later, in 1925, Pacific Palisades had 100 homes. Eventually, cabins were replaced by bungalows, and later, by multi-million dollar homes with amazing views. Through the years, this beautiful place has been home to a number of intellectuals, actors, and other famous residents including: (Politicians) Ronald Reagan, Arnold Scharzenegger; (Writers/Producers/Directors) J.J. Abrams, Judd Apatow, Chris Carter, Sydney Pollack, Nancy Meyers, Steven Spielberg; (Actors) Lionel Atwill, Richard Boone, Chevy Chase, Tommy Chong, Jamie Lee Curtis, Walter Matthau, Rita Moreno, Gavin McLeod, Brad Pitt, Anthony Quinn, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, Emile Hirsch, Anthony Hopkins, Nicole Kidman, Ted Knight, Ray Liotta, Thelma Todd, Vivian Vance; (Musicians) Randy Newman, Stevie Nicks, Ozzy Osbourne, Jack Owens, John Mayer, Mike Love, Dennis Wilson; (Athletes) Kobe Bryant, Vlade Divak; etc. just to name a few. Known as "Where The Mountains Meet the Sea", Pacific Palisades currently has about 27,000 residents. Looking south along Roosevelt Highway, later renamed the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), in Pacific Palisades. The highway runs parallel with the ocean where visitors enjoy the sun and surf. Visible in the distance, the landmark Lighthouse bathhouse that stood on Pacific Coast Highway at the point where the Santa Monica Mountains come down to the shore.
