Description
Original program notes: Fauna on Film: A Phylogenic Tree | Sun April 5 1998 Mark Dion and Marina McDougall will explore how our own human, rather than animal, nature is inevitably revealed in conceptions of the animal other. This mini-survey of the animal film genre includes clips from Disney’s True Life Adventure Series; Ant City; and Koko: A Talking Gorilla. Mark Dion’s site-specific work has focused on his interest in and concern for the environment as well as the fields through which the natural world is conceptualized and controlled, namely museological and scientific practices, taxonomic classification systems, and natural history. Mark is an Artist in Residence this spring at Headlands Center for the Arts. Marina McDougall is a San Francisco filmmaker and independent curator who has worked with the Exploratorium and the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles. She is co-editing a forthcoming book entitled Science is Fiction: The Films of Jean Painleve, about the pioneering French scientific filmmaker.
