Description
Note: Als Nr. 67 publiziert im Album 'Achtzig Ansichten von der Goldküste (Westafrika) nach Originalaufnahmen des Missionars Fritz Ramseyer', Neuenburg 1895.
Note translation: Published as no 67 in the album 'Achtzig Ansichten von der Goldküste (Westafrika) nach Originalaufnahmen des Missionars Fritz Ramseyer' (= 'Eighty pictures of the Goldcoast (West Africa) photographed by the missionary Fritz Ramseyer'), Neuchâtel 1895. - Caption there: "Sewing school in Abetifi. In the mornings our girls go to school. In the afternoons they have sewing classes on the veranda of the mission house, where they learn sewing and crocheting. They especially enjoy the latter. Some of the girls are sewing up patterns sent to us from Europe, to make little clothes for the children in the elementary school." - The French caption in 'Quatre-vingts vues...' is somewhat more explicit: "Our young girls, at least the youngest of them, go to school in the mornings. But in the afternoons they have dress-making classes on the veranda under the direction of Mrs R. We see our girls from 8-14 years of age, some of them sewing, the others crocheting, which they especially love. The youngest are sewing sample pieces of cloth ("échantillons) which friends sometimes send, and of which the largest are made into clothes for the elementary school."
