“The top form. Form II at our secondary school with Mr Bernard Mate, principal, on the veranda. (later, thro’ change of titles, inter-med, sch)” Group portrait of a class and teacher outside the school. Mr Mate went from Chogoria to the Alliance High School, Kikuyu, and in 1941 to Makerere College [Uganda] on a headmaster’s course. In1947 he became Principal of the secondary school at Chogoria. In 1952 a new ordinance meant that Chogoria was known as an Intermediate Boarding school rather than a Junior Secondary, and also came under the control of the Meru District Education Board. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1947-1961 at the Chogoria mission which was established near Mt Kenya, in 1922, and run by Dr Irvine.
