View of the Great Arch, part of five corbelled arched screens, showing the detailed carving. In the courtyard in front of the arch stands an iron pillar. The ruins are part of the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque built, by Qutb-ud-din Aybak about 1200, using material from Hindu Temples. The site is known as the Qutub complex and holds a number of the earliest Islamic buildings in India. ❧ This is one of a series of photographs contained in an album showing popular tourist attractions in India, the album was owned by an unknown Church of Scotland missionary who had probably taken the tour whilst working out in the region. Unfortunately there is very little information with the photographs as to there ownership or subject matter.
