Marian Hurst, a nurse at St. Elizabeth's Refugee Hospital, is playing with a very young Chinese boy in the patients' ward. The boy was nicknamed "the Cake Eater". The photograph was taken in April 1939. Elizabeth H. Falck was a member of the American Church Mission (ACM) in Shanghai, China (ca. 1923-1929). She left behind many writings and photographs relating to hospitals in China.
