Description
This March 2, 1934, photograph shows the 10,000 ton intercoastal freighter "Harpoon" of the Shepard Lines, moored along the Sacramento River at N Street. The boat's arrival came at the behest of William Stone, an early proponent of Sacramento as a major inland port. His efforts helped Sacramento qualify as a terminal rate port. The "Harpoon" was, up to that time, the largest ship to sail the Sacramento River. A tugboat rests to port while a small motor boat operates in the foreground.
