Description
Two girls and their mother are enjoying books. One daughter is kneeling before an open illustrated volume, holding a pointer to help her read. Her sister, standing behind, holds another thread bound book, similar in color to the cover of the one her mother holds open on the desk. Also on the desk is writing, such as calligraphy brushes in a cylindrical holder, a brush rest, an ink stone and water bottles. Western style cloth bound books are stacked on a shelf above two wooden Japanese book storage boxes. On a table nearby is a bonsai arrangement, a counterpoint to the alarm clock that stands on the cabinet. Painted on the cabinet sliding doors is a scene with Hotei, one of the Gods of Good Fortune, boating and drinking.
