Description
This photograph captures Greenback Lane looking toward Beach Avenue near Orangevale, in circa 1925. In 1964, the artery was widened to four lanes, at the cost of several of the palms to the left of the frame. The rode's etymology resides in its purchase from the Van Maren family in the 1860s by way of Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase's "greenback demand notes," the paper currency issued during the American Civil War.
