Typed caption accompanying image in photo album: "This was the 'Path-finder,' an automobile fitted up with a powerful multi-tube receiving set connected to a Magnavox Power-Amplifier with 200 volt 'B' battery and several big storage batteries. There was almost no limit to the power and it could be heard all over town. Mechanician, Frank G. Schmidt, is standing at the right, next to him is Herrold and Von Bumbala, employed by Herrold standing at the extreme left. Gurvine, stunt pilot and auto racer in the center with his wife at the wheel." With this system, Herrold could "broadcast" radio concerts wherever he drove his automobile. Photo was taken outside of Herrold's place of business at 467 South First Street, San Jose.
