Description
Photograph of the old Spanish Convent of Santa Catalina on Main Street, later the site of the San Carlos Hotel, Monterey, ca.1898. A muddy, unpaved road stands in front of a dilapidated two-story adobe, its bricks showing on its left side where the remnants of a second adobe stand. The building has three main doors, and some sort of stain is running down its front. General Alvarado's residence can be seen on the hill in the left background, with the home of Manuel Vallejo visible behind it. The collapsed portion of wall next to the adobe was once the home of Isabella Jimeno.
