Carlsbad, California is a seaside resort community located in Northern San Diego County. One of the city's founders, Capt. John Frazier, discovered mineral water in 1882 when he drilled a well for his farm near the beach. The alkaline mineral water cured a stomach ailment he had suffered with for years. The water was chemically very similar to the healing spring mineral waters found in a famous European spa resort that was at that time called Karlsbad, in Bohemia. Today, the city is Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, and is still famous for its therapeutic spas. After falling into disrepair, the well was restored and now can be seen in front of the Carlsbad Mineral Water Spa. Photograph caption dated October 3, 1963 reads "Spa remembered." The article partially reads "There's a small garden-monument in Carlsbad honoring the community's namesake, a noted spa in Czechoslovakia." Pictured is a gazebo surrounding a well, nestled among trees.
