The students competed with more than 1,000 other students from throughout California. Biljana Cicin-Sain, student body president at James Monroe High School in Sepulveda, was awarded one of two $1,000 scholarships - the top dollar value offered in the school's Alumni Association program. Warren Thoreson, chairman of the Central Valley UCLA Alumni Association scholarship committee, said students are selected on the basis of scholarship, need, student activities in high school and potential."
