Description
This circa-1895 photo shows the Folsom Water Power Company dam at the Stony Gorge section of the American River, 1 mile northeast of Folsom, Calif. The dam was the brainchild of Horatio Gates Livermore, who wanted a way to float logs down the American River into a log boom reservoir. In addition, the dam would channel water – via power canal – through the Folsom Prison powerhouse and, furthermore, toward the Folsom power plant. In the upper portion of the photograph is the west bank of the American River. A fish ladder can be seen at the far left of the photograph.
