Outside of a Northrop hangar, pilot Bernt Balchen (second from left) and explorer Lincoln Ellsworth (right) apply the name label "Polar Star" to a Northrop Gamma, which Balchen will fly over Antarctica while Ellsworth charts the continent. The "Polar Star" is one of two Northrop Gammas that were the first aircraft produced in 1933 by the newly established Northrop Corporation. In April 1936, Lincoln Ellsworth donated the Polar Star to the Smithsonian. Photo dated: October 18, 1932.
