Description
The store on the hill in Englishtown was one of two that served New Almaden. Unlike most company towns, the New Almaden stores were leased to private merchants. This store was operated by Derby & and Lowe. Prices were only slightly higher than stores in San Jose, due to freighting cost. Photo mounted on board. On back of photo: Handwritten in ink: "The Hill, New Almaden, Calif. Hill Store. Early 90s. Dad Malone Driving Store Wagon. From Joseph Harris, Head Clerk in the Hill branch of Almaden Store."
