Description
Image of caricature full-length portraits of comedians Frank Wills, Frank Girard, and Charles Burke, with weather thermometers in place of their torsos, holding canes and Japanese fans while dancing in a row on a glacier with a ship against an iceberg in the background; date sheet for a January 21, [1885], show, presumably at the Fulton Opera House in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, pasted to bottom of image; the poster advertises the comedy "A Cold Day When We Get Left" written by Joseph Arthur.
Probable date based on month and day in date sheet and printer history; Thomas operated from 47 E. 12th St. in 1884 and 1885. A Lancaster, Pennsylvania, newspaper advertised Girard and the play at the Fulton Opera House on January 21, 1885 (Lancaster Daily Intelligencer, 19 January 1885, page 4). "H.A. Thomas Lith. 47 E. 12th St. N.Y."--text, bottom right margin. Frank Wills [space] Frank Girard [space] Charles Burke"--text, captions at bottom of image. "Opera House/ A / Cold / Day / One night only / Wednesday, / Jan. 21 / When / We / Get Left."--text, date sheet, attached to bottom of poster.
