Photograph caption dated January 2, 1983 reads, "On the first day of the rest of 1983, the young, the old, and the hardy betrayed an eagerness to enter one great trackless ocean or another. At Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro, more than 200 members of the Polar Bear Club raced across the sands to meet membership requirements by bathing in the wintry waters of the Pacific, which yesterday registered 49 degrees Fahrenheit."
