Photograph caption dated August 27, 1962 reads "There's a lot more that goes into getting a school ready for its Sept. 17 opening than just opening the door. There are books to be purchased, desks to be arranged, blackboards to be cleaned, papers to be filed, equipment to be tested. Everyone around a school takes part in the getting-ready process. At left, Mrs. Gretchen McIntyre, principal of the brand-new Liggett Street School in Panorama City, tries out the school's intercom system. In center photo, Mrs. Geraldine Drolshagen, school custodian, applies a damp cloth to table tops in preparation for next month's big day. At right, Mrs. Marguerite Rander, clerk, files away books that will be used during coming semester. Some 227,000 students are expected to attend Los Angeles City School District schools this fall.
