Photograph of a block print A block print by Hal Blakesley, entitled "Anacapa Island Cat and Rat" and the wrecked ship, Winfield Scott. A cat appears on the left, and a rat on the right. The shipwreck is in the center. The disaster occurred on December 1, 1853, when the captain chose to sail inland of the island to save time and sailed head-on into Anacapa in dense fog. 400 passengers were removed as well as gold bullion being shipped from San Francisco to Panama during the Gold Rush.
