Description
Richard Bushman is Gouverneur Morris Professor of History, Emeritus, at Columbia University. He suggests the Book of Mormon should be considered an "apocryphal Bible" and an extension of the Bible. He describes the Book of Mormon as canonically expansive and inclusive, and is as authoritative as the biblical prophets. Thus, there is not just one book but "one process of God speaking to His prophets as they write". This means that Bible language and Bible texts are not restricted to one time or place. The Book of Mormon, then, is not a rival of the Bible but "an indication that there are other Bibles to come". Bushman suggests this means not only that people in Israel were "right" about God, but that people everywhere were "right".
