Photograph caption dated August 21, 1961 reads, "Bearing up in the high temperatures and humidity that is baking the Valley and the rest of Los Angeles are the animals in Griffith Park Zoo, including the polar bears and penguins who are accustomed to temperatures closer to 0 than to 100.
