Description
This frenetic photograph, taken in September 1895, shows a few of the 30,000 travelers who made their way to Sacramento for the Grand Electric Carnival and California Admission Day festivities. The picture captures a view from Second and I streets, looking southward. A large sign welcomes members of the Native Sons of the Golden West, perhaps the highest-profile participants in the festivities. Founded in 1875, the group sought to preserve the historical memory of Anglo-European California. The group was instrumental in providing lodging for visitors to the overwhelmed city, compiling a list of private homes and hotels that allowed reservations at a uniform price of $1 per person, or $2 for a double bed.
