Description
The U.S. Army Transport Ship Sherman, carrying troops back to California from the Philippines in April 1899, sparked the first ship-to-shore wireless telegraphy message, igniting public interest in the practical uses of wireless technology. The message was sent from the U.S. Lightship #70, San Francisco, which had spotted the Sherman in the fog. The message was sent over seven miles of open sea to a relay station at the Cliff House (Ocean Beach) and on to the San Francisco Call building. (The Call had funded the experiment).
