Ordained a priest in 1962,ordained titular bishop in 1975, appointed Bishop in 1980; Roger Michael Cardinal Mahony (b. February 27, 1936) was appointed Archbishop of Los Angeles by Pope John Paul II on July 16, 1985. He was installed as the fourth Roman Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles on September 5, 1985. Pope John Paul II created him a cardinal on June 28, 1991. Born in Hollywood, Cardinal Mahony is the first native Angeleno and the third Archbishop of Los Angeles to be created a cardinal. In this photo, he is seen wearing a red hardhat, standing in front of a cross that is being lifted by a crane, to be placed at the top of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angeles' campanile.
