Photograph was edited for publication purposes On October 3, 1953, Marion Piper, who had been hitchhiking to Bakersfield, was picked up by John Richard Jensen, a mental patient parolee. Piper was kidnapped, shot, and buried in a shallow grave by Jensen who had previously been found guilty of the 1939 murder of his La Crescenta playmate and spent several years in an insane asylum. Piper managed to crawl his way to Sandberg Lodge where he was found by the Stevens family, owners of the resort. Photograph caption dated January 17, 1955 reads, "Marion Piper, ex-Marine, reads Valley Times account of his near murder by mental patient parolee as he fondles Poker, Dalmatian dog which discovered him critically wounded and summoned help. Piper is visiting his rescuers who live near Gorman."; See images #00137749 through #00137750 for all photos in this series.
