Description
Photograph of American soldiers passing through the narrow street of a French village on the way to the front, ca.1915. The soldiers are riding in horse-drawn wagons or on horseback. A long line of them winds through the village on a curving road lined with tall houses. A small number of French citizens has come out to watch the procession. Towards the front of the American column, a mounted soldier is carrying a flag with crossed cannon barrels and the characters "US 1".
