Born in Pennsylvania in 1830. Came overland to California in 1850. Settled in Colfax, Placer County. Worked in gold mines. Served as Sheriff of Place County, elected State Senator in 1871. Served in various capacities - Railroad Commissioner, State Prison Commissioner, Trustee of the State Library, president of Miners' Association of California. Served as Lieutenant Governor from 1899 to 1903. Died in 1909.
