Photograph caption dated July 24, 1985 reads, "LAPD Officer mark Warschaw surveys car that split in two when it slammed into a light pole at Ninth and Hill streets following a high-speed police chase from East Los Angeles. Eugene Mancillas, 19, was booked for driving under the influence of drugs and was in guarded condition. His 16-year-old passenger, who was thrown from the vehicle, suffered head injuries and was in extremely critical condition at County-USC Medical Center. The area was blocked off for over five hours following the 3:30 a.m. crash yesterday."
