A young school girl wearing a school uniform runs past the ruins of a damaged building in the town of Berlín. On the left of the image are two oxen tied to a cart. One of the empty and damaged buildings contains graffiti on the wall, which reads "Free country or death - for the dead and for our dead we vow to win. ERP FMLN." FMNL is the acronym for the Frente Farabundo Marti? para la Liberacio?n Nacional. Guerrillas occupied the town for four days before the Salvadoran military assaulted the town with rockets fired from airplanes. Bishop Arturo Rivera y Damas, bishop of San Salvador, denounced the assault shortly after noting that the destruction left more than 300 people (mostly civilians, and few Salvadoran soldiers and rebels) had died during that week of February.
