Description
Photograph of a drawing by Edward Vischer depicting the Mission Santa Barbara as seen from the southeast, 1865. In the foreground are several unsaddled horses among the bushes and small trees of the hilly terrain. A collapsing longhouse or barn, with a thatched roof, is visible at left. The mission, in the background, is distinguished by two tall bell towers flanking the main portico, a long low building with a series of arches supporting a tile roof over an exterior corridor extending from its left side. Small groups of people are visible here and there in the area in front of the mission. Low hills rise in the distance at left. The text below the image reads: "South-east view of Santa Barbara Convent (sketched May 6th 1865". Image acquired? by C.C. Pierce around 1925.
