Description
This circa 1930 photograph shows high waters between both Andrus and Taylor Islands along the Sacramento River Delta. The seven thousand acre Andrus Island was named after George Andrus who settled the area in 1852. By the dawn of the twentieth-century, Andrus was home to an assortment of orchards, garden vegetables and grains. Tyler Island, set to the east of Andrus, was settled also in 1852, by S.C. Tyler. Its earliest and most distinguishing crop came in the form of pear orchards, making it one of California's first pear growing areas.
