Description
Survival school students (first row, L-R) Ron Venn, Marilyn Chandler and Jack Madeley stand on the sides of a pond in wet clothes. They hold their pants in hand as they learn to convert the clothing into life preservers. Other students (back row, L-R) Brian Schwarz and Allen Mons stand in the pond near the inflated pants that serve as life preservers. The 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, was owned by Harry Claflin, a former U.S. Marine in Vietnam. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. Claflin also spent time studying the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces.
