Description
Image of construction supplies and equipment used to excavate soil for the construction of the McClure Tunnel near the Roosevelt Highway (later Pacific Coast Highway) and Palisades Beach Road in Santa Monica, California.
This is a copy negative (a photograph of another photograph). Title based on note from donor Ernest Marquez on envelope in which negative was received: "Construction of tunnel in Santa Monica." Date devised by cataloger based on the construction of the McClure Tunnel and coastal highway junction that began in 1934. The McClure Tunnel was previously known as the Olympic Tunnel and renamed to honor Santa Monica Outlook editor Robert E. McClure in 1969.
