An Army PT-1 plane powered by a Hisso engine at Mines Field (Los Angeles International Airport) in Westchester during the 1928 National Air Races. Developed from the Dayton-Wright TW-3 airplane, the PT-1, used by the Army for training purposes, featured a welded fuselage framework of chrome-molybdenum steel tubing, which proved so sturdy and dependable that the plane earned the nickname "Trusty." This air competition, comprised of a series of pylon and cross-country races, took place annually from 1920 to 1949. Due to the rapid development of aviation science during those years, there was significant popular interest in this event. The 1928 races ran from September 8-16.
