Description
f. 1v miniature; ff. 2-489; f. 489v blank. [Bible]. Latin. ff. 2-367v, Old Testament; ff. 368-462v, New Testament; ff. 463-489, Interpretations of Hebrew Names. Bible with 85 prologues; text includes the prayer of Manasses, and 3 Ezra followed by the Psalms (Pss. 69 and 85:4 through 87:6 not copied, apparently because of scribal error) and 7 Old Testament and 2 New Testament canticles; prayer of Solomon after Ecclesiasticus.
Title from printed catalog. Support: Parchment. Layout: 1²(1 is pastedown) 2⁴ 3-36¹⁰ 37¹² 38¹⁰(through f. 367) 39-47¹⁰ 48⁶(-6; through f. 462) 49¹⁰ 50⁸ 51⁸(+1). Catchwords horizontally in the inside lower margin. 2 columns of 56 lines ruled in light brown ink, double bounding lines at the sides and single lines top and bottom; additional double rule in upper margin for running headlines. Decoration: Full page miniature of mediocre quality, f. 1v, added perhaps late in the fifteenth century, of the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Other Decoration: Genesis initial I the length of the text and almost the width of the first column in gold strapwork on white vine stem with a bust of Moses holding the tablets of the Law; on the same page, full border of white vine stem with birds, dragonflies, putti and a coat of arms. Similar opening page to the New Testament, somewhat rubbed. Similar initials for the books and prologues, 14- to 7-line; 3-line blue initials for chapters placed outside the written space. First words of each chapter or psalm in pale red ink; rubrics in the same shade. Chapter numbers and running headlines in blue. Signed and dated 14 times, with dates between 1452 and 1453, by Niccolò Berti Martini de' Gentiluzi (approximately 1388-1468) often with a motto (cf. f. 91, "Nichil inpossibile est amori"), and twice with the motto alone. Assigned Date: s. XVmed. Input into Digital Scriptorium by: C. W. Dutschke, 2/11/2012. Cataloged from existing description: C. W. Dutschke with the assistance of R. H. Rouse et al., Guide to Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the Huntington Library (San Marino, 1989). Bound, s. XVIII, in red morocco over wooden boards, gold tooled with dentelle patterns and floral motifs at the angles, and a large circular flower and eagle center decoration; 2 fore edge clasps (1 remains), closing front to back; red and green sprinkled edges.
