Photograph caption dated April 2, 1963 reads, "One group, including high officials, gathered yesterday on the 2.6-mile San Diego Freeway section linking Lawndale and Hawthorne to formally open it. Another group came unexpectedly to protest the opening They were mothers and pupils from nearby schools, protesting construction of off-ramps near schools."
