Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of this interview Les Rice was Maintenance Lead Worker at the Salinas Maintenance Yard for Caltrans. After the Loma Prieta earthquake, the next day Rice volunteered to go assist Caltrans District 4 in the Bay Area. Rice shares his experiences working on decking for Route 80, 580 and at the Cypress Structure. Rice expressed regret that he could not do more to assist in the repair efforts in the Bay Area.
