Description
"Mr. Biuks, a settler from Yorkshire, building for himself a house". Exterior view of a wood framed, reed and mud house being built by indigenous workers. The mission to the Akikuyu [Kikuyu people] was at Kikuyu, in the Thogoto district, near Nairobi. The mission was established by Thomas Watson in 1898 and the Church of Scotland took on responsibility for the mission after his death in 1901 This image is from a collection of photographs which possibly belonged to Dr Karl Uffman, son of Dr Henry Uffman of the Leprosy Asylum in Purulia, West Bengal. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and joined the Kikuyu mission in Kenya, from 1901 to 1905.
