Williams entered this photograph of soldiers training at Fort Ord into a Life Magazine photo contest. He called it "Training to Kill." Fort Ord, where Williams was sent for basic training in 1950-51, was a United States Army post in Monterey, California. Used for military training beginning in 1917, the post became a Fort in 1941 and remained so until 1994. During the Korean War, Fort Ord was home to the 6th Infantry Division. The contest caption is on reverse: "Life Contest Entry No. 1982. Name: PFC Hanson Williams. Address 6513 A.S.U P.O.C. Service Address: Fort MacArthur, San Pedro, California. Title: Training to Kill.
