Description
The Folsom Water Power Company’s power canal runs toward the powerhouse at Folsom State Prison in this circa-1895 photograph. The canal – built with granite harvested by Folsom prisoners – was 8 feet deep, 40 feet wide on the bottom and 50 feet wide on the surface. It also ran along the entire frontage of the prison yard. The fall of the canal from the dam to the canal’s terminus in Folsom was 82 feet. The powerhouse, with its vertical windows, operated with six Laffel turbines. The prison’s guard towers can be seen in the upper left side of the photograph while, in the distance, are two rises, the nearest being China Hill.
